ITA Interiors designed and project managed the careful renovation of this lavatory whilst preserving and showcasing the existing original wallpaper.

When the client had first bought the property, they were drawn to this lavatory due to its unique Sumi-e inspired Japanese artwork which was not mirrored anywhere else in the house and they were keen on preserving it as much as possible. Prior plumbing issues had meant that parts of the wall structure and wallpaper were damaged. We set about retaining as much of the existing walls, even detailing parts of the design by hand and then sealing it in a layer of varnish to add long-lasting protection.

We installed polished steel fixings and matte-black detailing as well as beautiful, deep emerald tiles to resonate with the aesthetic and create a truly captivating and mysterious rainforest-like ambience within the lavatory. Details such as the golden candles and gold-rimmed mirror help to provide slight disparity within the room which further enhances a sense of captivation and disorientation in this rainforest oasis. When you step into this portal-like room, you are transported into an entirely different world, making it hard to believe that you are actually situated in a quaint period house in the centre of London – and this is the exact feeling that the client had fallen in love with when they first saw the room 15 years ago and one that we were incredibly proud to rekindle.
